Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS or rTMS)

About TMS

TMS therapy is a painless, non-invasive, FDA approved treatment for depression that has been clinically proven to help depression treatment resistant patients. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is free of serious side-effects unlike electro-convulsive therapy (ECT).

The whole procedure only takes about 40 minutes, requires no anesthesia or sedation of any kind and is conducted on a outpatient basis right in a TMS specialists office. The length of treatment usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks with the patient receiving a once a day application of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is able to influence many brain functions, including movement, visual perception, memory, reaction time, speech and mood.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS or rTMS) was based on the theory that many mental illnesses have been demonstrated to stem from the abnormal behaviour of a particular region of the brain. TMS specifically works by sending magnetic pulses to the frontal left side of the brain which creates weak electrical currents in the left side of the brain similar to getting a magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the brain. The left side of the brain is the targeted area for TMS treatment because clinical studies of patients diagnosed with major depression have shown that the left side of the brain area is often the most underactive resulting in low levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS or rTMS) is one of the many cutting edge state-of-the-art 21st Century Psychiatry services that are offered at Alpha Behavioral Care in Summit, NJ.
